How to Estimate Roofing Area
Understand how a simple roof-area estimate uses footprint area, pitch and waste.
Start with the roof footprint
A simple rectangular footprint is length × width. Because a pitched roof has sloped surfaces, its covering area is larger than its horizontal footprint.
Apply the roof geometry
A pitch factor can convert plan area into an approximate sloped area. The correct factor depends on the roof geometry and pitch. For a complex roof, measure each plane instead of using one factor for the entire building.
Add product allowance
Roof coverings can require additional material for laps, cuts, ridges, valleys and penetrations. Product-specific installation instructions should be used for the final take-off.
Not a roof design: This guide and calculator estimate surface area only. They do not specify structure, flashing, drainage or compliance requirements.
