Deck Calculator Guide: Boards, Area and Joists
Estimate deck area, decking board length, board count and approximate joist count for a rectangular deck.
Decking estimates combine surface area with board dimensions, installation gaps and framing spacing. The calculator helps with preliminary material planning, but it is not a structural design tool: spans, supports, fixings and local requirements must be checked against the actual decking system.
Measure the deck footprint
Measure finished length and width. For an irregular deck, divide it into rectangles and calculate the sections separately.
Account for board width and gap
The number of board courses depends on actual board width plus the intended gap. Use product specifications rather than relying on nominal sizes.
Estimate total board length
Multiply board courses by deck length and add a waste allowance for cuts and unusable off-cuts.
Estimate joists carefully
Joist count is based on deck width and centre-to-centre spacing. Final spacing must follow structural requirements for the chosen product and project.
Formula
Board runs ≈ deck width ÷ (board width + gap). Board length ≈ board runs × deck length × (1 + waste percentage ÷ 100).
Worked example
For a 6 m × 4 m deck using 140 mm boards with a 5 mm gap, board courses are based on 0.145 m per course. The calculator then estimates total board length and adds the selected waste allowance.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Ignoring the installation gap.
- Using nominal board width instead of actual dimensions.
- Treating joist count as a structural design calculation.
- Forgetting cuts and unusable off-cuts.
Frequently asked questions
Why does the board gap matter?
The gap changes how many board courses fit across the deck width, so ignoring it can understate board quantity.
Does the calculator design joists?
No. It provides an approximate count from spacing; structural span and support requirements must be checked separately.
Should I add waste?
Yes. Cuts and unusable off-cuts can reduce the usable length of purchased boards.
